Ecological Footprint Study
Genuine Progress Indicator

Utah Vital Signs

Utah Vital Signs is a sustainability indicators effort of ours.  The goal of Utah Vital Signs is to empower Utah citizens and decision-makers to make better choices about their future by providing clear, well documented information regarding key indicators of environmental sustainability in Utah.

The Ecological Footprint of Utah study was completed in 2007.  The Utah Genuine Progress Indicator Study is completed and was announced in January, 2011.  Please be sure to see our GPI page and read the results!  The Genuine Progress Indicator (GPI) study is an objective quality of life measure.  The GPI is a much better alternative to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) that seeks to truly measure the economic well being of society.  For more info go to it's link on the menu to the left.  You can download summary and/or detail report information.

In 2007, the we announced our first Utah Vital Signs report:  Utah Ecological Footprint Study.  This report integrated data from many agencies and organizations, and calculated how well Utah is sustaining its unique natural heritage and preserving it for future generations.

A key highlight from the 2007 Ecological Footprint of Utah study:

Our research discovered that Utah is living beyond its ecological means, with consumption of resources exceeding nature's renewable supply. Between 1990 and 2003, Utah went from an ecological surplus of 10.8 million global hectares to an ecological deficit of 2.4 million global hectares.  Please go to one of the lower menu options to the left for more info.

The above chart combines data from both of our studies.  It can be found as figure 12 in our full GPI report (see GPI, the left lowest menu option and learn about our GPI study)
